DEX 3.6 Public Beta 4 Now Available

Here’s What’s New And Changed In DEX 3.6 Beta 4
    3.6.0 beta 4 (both Mac/Windows).
    Changes since beta 3:

    – Loop small videos (if you link a video clip that is smaller than the audio track, the video gets looped)
    – Fixed loading of corrupted (but recoverable) tracks like certain WMA files (eg. wmapro with bad frames)
    – Fixed video recording, you can now record in MP4 on Windows too (better overall video recording quality)
    – Various small performance improvements

bertiepr – I understand where your coming from, completely.

It’s an issue because Karaoki isn’t a video player, relying on third-party codecs for video playback. I’m sure some of the other products you’ve tried are native video players. It hasn’t been a priority of us since most of our users over the last 8 years primarily use standard mp3+G/zipped karaoke files, but we have seen an increase in karaoke mp4 usage recently. We will be looking into options for a more universal solution for video playback in Karaoki, but for the most part, for now, codecs have done the trick for users – albeit tricky at times.

Hello Beat578, and welcome to the forum!

Yes, right-click in the rotation list and select “rotation options” from the menu. Under here you will see a setting for screen 2 text color – click it and set your color, that’s it!

Yes, I would think so anyway! Since the Active X control when enabled on the HC4500 (I do forget the command to do his unfortunately, it’s been a few years!) basically makes the fader work as a midi/hid crossfader – the “learn” feature should work,

Just have the HC4500 connected to the mixer and active X control enabled – then click LEARN in PCDJ. Then click the crossfader on screen. Move the fader on the mixer to the left, then move it to the right. Then click LEARN on screen to exit again – in theory this should map the physical fader on the mixer to the on-screen fader/s.

Jp, we don’t have all the details of the new product yet, and aren’t at a point where we can share what it will entail publicly.

Keep in mind this decision is a new one – based on list mode being somewhat dated from a code standpoint, it’s also creating some issues with some of the newer functions of the software. Like doubling singers, and re-ordering the list when adding/removing singers. We only decided to move away from list mode about 2 weeks ago.

The way you use the rotation is fairly unique, but I personally feel you can do all of those items just as easily with fixed mode – which had some issues early on, but shouldn’t now. You can just as easily move singers around, pull them out of rotation, etc as in list mode.

    Thanks

    JP,

    Per your questions:

“On a separate note, I have a question; are other previously mentioned changes included in this beta?
Ex: Singer Name dialogue box automatically moving typing cursor to text box, and using “Enter” button to finalize selection in dialogue box?”

Yes, that feature is included – so when you drag a track to a singer in rotation you can just click ENTER on your keyboard to send the song to rotation (as opposed to having to click “OK” with your mouse).

Yes, ‘list mode’ is gone by design. Alan had mentioned we plan to break off that rotation mode and solo artist features into a new product targeting solo singers and home use. I am surprised to hear you do not like the fixed rotation mode – care to elaborate why? I am curious, since once this feature was added to Karaoki sales increased nearly 80% – it seems like most KJs want the software to manage the rotation for them, as opposed to having to manually do it in list mode. The value of course is that if a singer comes up and asks for 3 songs, you can put them and all three of their songs into their queue – and the software will rotate them in the list throughout the night, keeping a proper rotation order.

It’s also easy to pull singers out – just double-click their name (brings up the singer data screen with their personal queue and history) and click IN ROTATION to pull them out. You can also pull in songs from their history in the singer data screen, re-order songs in their queue – etc. I find “fixed mode” to be much more KJ friendly with these features.

Don’t expect to see list mode back in the ‘normal’ Karaoki updates – but rather a new, lighter product coming down the pipe.

Must be a different codec being picked up for those mp4 files vs the others, so may be tough for us to troubleshoot the reason on this end unfortunately.

dftweedie – no sweat! Just glad you figured it out 🙂

Keep the suggestions going guys. I may not reply to you directly on your suggestion, but that doesn’t mean it’s not being considered etc. Some good, thoughtful stuff so far!

    Ryan Sherr

    dftweedie – you said:

“Also, how do you change the rotation order? I try dragging and dropping the singers in the left side panel of the singer’s list, but that doesn’t seem to work.”

Drag and drop to re-arrange singers in the rotation list should definitely work just fine. Not from “singer data”, but directly in the rotation list. Make sure you’re using “fixed rotation” now as well (we’re going to be removing the old “list mode” soon and creating a different version of Karaoki for hobbyists and solo artists from it).

To be sure you’re in fixed mode – right click in the rotation list and select “rotation options” – select FIXED.

If you still can’t drag and drop to re-order singers in the rotation list please let me know! That wouldn’t be ‘normal’.

Also, when you are in the singer data screen for any singer you can right click on any song in their queue or history and choose to “move to top” or “move to bottom” etc. You can also just put a tick in the box for any songs you want to immediately send from history to rotation – and re-order songs any way you please in the singer data screen too.

    What build are you using??

    “cast to your second screen”

Using what exactly? I know with chrome cast it would result in sync issues – especially if you’re trying to broadcast the audio from your laptop directly but using the cast for just video – it would result in about 2 second delay between the two.

Check out this blog post from a user on how he wirelessly transmits the video from Karaoki:

That solution surprisingly seems to work well for broadcasting the singers display!

    Hello Pops,

Key changes are remembered automatically in a singers history (so if you place the song back into rotation from the singers history it will remember to change key to the previous key change when loading to the deck).

Be sure to adjust key IN the singers list BEFORE you load the track for the key change to be remembered. Right click on the singer/song in rotation and key it up or down there – or double-click the singers name and key the song up and down in their singer queue. Then, if you use load next singer to load/play from rotation the key change will automatically occur as soon as the track is loaded to the deck.

Let me know if you need further guidance on this!

bertiepr – It could be the type of MP4 as they are not all equal. Various encoding options and containers can be used for MP4 files.

What I know is we’ve been selling a karaoke download pack of HD karaoke files here:

We have sold the HD packs to many a Karaoki customer and they are using these files in Karaoki, with various OS’s. As I also explained in my previous response I am able to play the mp4 files on my windows 10 machine.

No mistake though, I know users have had problems with codecs due to conflicts or the like – results seem to vary greatly, even when users are on the same OS and use the same codec pack. It’s not an exact science.

Karaoki is not a native video player, so the nuances of using codecs unfortunately come into play.

Can you send me one of your mp4 files so I can check it out here? rsherr AT pcdj dot com.

I understand that’s your current experience, and I certainly hope the QT suggestion works for you.

I should state clearly that many customers can play mp4 videos in Karaoki using Windows 10 (most of the time, all they need to do is install the klite mega codec pack – and in some cases they don’t need to install ANYTHING to play mp4s). I’m one of them – I can play the HD MP4 files from Digitrax in Karaoki on this machine (Which has loads of other media software, too).

Codecs are considered fickle things, as they can be hit or miss from machine to machine. Karaoki is not a native video player, therefore the current requirement for third party codecs is necessary.

Bertiepr, you can’t tell Karaoki which codec to pick up. But if you have other media software on the machine you will likely continue to have issues since those products likely have their own codecs installed, creating the conflict.

One customer had success with all his MP4 videos after removing all other media software and codec packs – then installed quicktime (only) and set it up like this:

In config for QT I went to File Types
Unchecked Notify me if other app
unchecked everything except Video – QuickTime Movie

    In MIME Types:
Unchecked Notify me if other app
    Unchecked everything except these:
    Streaming – SDP stream descriptor
    Streaming – RTSP stream descriptor
    Video – QuickTime Movie
    Audio – WAVE audio
    Audio – MIDI

    Streaming:
    Uncheck Enable Instant-On

May be worth a shot. As most pro KJs dedicate their gig machine to performing with Karaoki its likely they don’t run into codec conflicts.

    QuickTime Player config:
Enable Use high quality video settings when available
Disable Show Content Guide at startup

OK this isn’t up on the site yet but we now have public beta 3 for DEX 3 – here’s what’s new and changed:

    Changes (since beta 2):
    – automatically configure audio for controllers (if the controller script implements it) + setting to disable/enable it
    – new controller actions and notifications for sampler (very easy to add normal/instant/stutter mode + led blinking to sampler leds on the controller)
    – fixed microphone problems
    – automatically enable On-Air when Talk is used
    – changed name from “pcdjDEX” to “DEX3”
    – updated to Pulselocker SDK 1.2 (still working only on MacOSX, disabled on Windows)
    – minor bug fixes

Are you sure Karaoki’s not just opening up full-screen on screen 2? So while it’s on your taskbar – it may actually be showing full-screen on a secondary display (seen this once or twice). If you connect a secondary display as you normally would for screen 2 lyrics – do you see Karaoki “over there”?

Hello, we would love to know what issue/s you had running the beta?

We have had a couple additional beta updates to address some issues over the last couple of weeks, so you may want to try the latest on this page of the beta testing thread: http://www.pcdj.com/forums/topic/beta-build-0-8-5879-23686-feb-5th-2016-2/page/2/

Also covered on that page of the testing thread is the required removal of the Select A Track store – as a UK based company they too have to geoblock US purchases, at least for the time being. Big crack down on foreign karaoke sales sites selling into the US right now, citing lack of proper licensing.

The karaoke cloud store is still available, and you should be able to purchase/download songs with a KC next to them.

Hoping we can add the SAT store back in the near future!

Bertiepr, it could actually be VDJ causing the issue for Karaoki. Codecs are pretty finicky things, and having ANY other media player on the machine could conflict. Karaoki will basically pick up what’s available, and other applications that install codecs can trump the codecs installed by KLITE.

These steps were sent to me by a customer that wasn’t able to get the KLITE mega pack to work for his mp4 files as well. He said after performing these actions with Quicktime he can now play all his video files (so Karaoki must be picking up the quicktime codec). Worth a go!

    I installed K-Lite Codec Pack
    And then

    I installed QuickTime.
In config for QT I went to File Types
Unchecked Notify me if other app
unchecked everything except Video – QuickTime Movie

    In MIME Types:
Unchecked Notify me if other app
    Unchecked everything except these:

    Streaming – RTSP stream descriptor
    Video – QuickTime Movie
    Audio – WAVE audio
    Audio – MIDI

    Streaming:
    Uncheck Enable Instant-On

    QuickTime Player config:
Enable Use high quality video settings when available
Disable Show Content Guide at startup

Let us know how it goes!

reverentx – thanks for the feedback, although I am a bit confused.

In singer data, you can right click and “uncheck all” if you select all. And you can then easily just put a tick in the box for each song you want to send to rotation, and re-order the tracks there too. To re-order just drag and drop to rearrange in the singer data screen.

I think I may be missing something?

bertierpr, remember – not all mp4’s are created equal (many encoding variations), and since Karaoki relies exclusively on third party codecs to play video files, it’s related to that. I know a customer recently said once he installed the mega codec pack from PCDJ.com and uninstalled Windows Media Player the MP4’s then played perfectly. Just an idea!

    Ryan Sherr

    Thanks!

I think there is a universal issue with the MIC in DEX 3 right now – which would present itself with the American Audio DP2. This is one of the fixes expected for 3.6.

I’ll have to install an old copy of DEX 2 to see what you mean with the mouse movements on the beat grid/waveform – I don’t remember that, but I believe you 🙂

We will support ANY controller we can get our hands on – its up to the manufacturer to supply the device on loan however. We need the controller here in order to support it correctly. I’ll reach out to our RANE contact!

    Ryan Sherr
    Keymaster

DJCoke, the new loading engine (in the 3.6 beta) seems to have addressed the pops/clicks on non VRM played songs that had the issue (tracked it down to certain encoders). There are some issues with 3.6, but we expect a new beta this week to address those other concerns – we’d appreciate if you let us know if the update does address the pops/clicks on songs that the mp3trimpro didn’t fix (keep in mind this is truly an indexing issue with VRM played songs – so if mp3trimpro does do the trick that’s good – since it’s fixing the issue at it’s core, and not just “ignoring” the bad frames).

We will be making it so history logs tracks after 20 seconds or so of continual playback.

With a $19.99 a month Pulselocker subscription you can download as many tracks as you wish for offline use – so you do not need internet at your gig at all (you can store as many tracks as you wish locally for offline use – for 30 days at a time between billing cycles).

If users want to create skins that look like controllers that’s entirely up to them. We have the “skin designer” that makes mapping your own custom skin design easier (much more so than in previous PCDJ software iterations). We create the default skins, users create any of the others – just like in years past. Search our site for “skin designer” to find the download.

Re-ordering playlists and much of what you’ve also pointed out are in the to-do as well.

Keep in mind here that when you build DJ software today, you have to take into account new DJs. The younger generation of DJs NEED a lot of these newer features you may not use. Yes, you want to stay loyal to your old-school users to a point, but unless you’re innovating for the younger generation of up and coming DJs you’re not going to survive in this competitive space today.

Pretty much everything else you’ve suggested is something we’re either already working on, or plan to soon. It all starts with the 3.6 update – which I hope to post this week for you all to download/try.

Thanks again guys, please keep it up. Development is watching 🙂

    Thanks doc!

Are you using the old LIST Mode for rotation? It sounds like it – can you try playing with the latest beta in the default “fixed rotation” mode?

Right click in the rotation list and go to Rotation Options – put it in “fixed mode” – then try things again and see if all the issues still persist.

Since the vast majority of Karaoki customers use “fixed mode” for the rotation list we want to know if these issues are related to “list mode” only – would be a big help! (in fixed mode the singer only displayed in rotation once, no matter how many songs in their own queue – when a track is loaded, after 20 seconds the singer is dropped to the bottom of the list (not removed from the list. You can pull a singer out of rotation by double-clicking their name in rotation and clicking the IN ROTATION button to pull them out).

    Thanks

matty507 – Text-to-screen is about 85% completed, but DEX 2/3 have only been out about 4 years now (and DEX 3 was built from scratch about 1 1/2 years ago). Text to screen and slideshow features will come soon.

Tom – We do plan to incorporate more karaoke-specific features in DEX 3, including a true rotation list (instead of just the basic singers list we have now) and potentially singer history. We just have some bigger fish to fry first, and expect a new public beta of 3.6 in the next week or so – which is more of a maintenance release with bug fixes for new features found in the new beta (And a new Pulselocker SDK).

Ronzo – not really clear on this one. Do you mean while a mix is being performed in DEX 3? The fader is already moving to the opposite deck? So you want to be able to click automix (turn it off) while it’s in the middle of mixing, and be able to stop the fader movement? Just want to make sure I’m clear! Thanks

Thanks jpmichel (although, wrong thread! 🙂 )

To take those items one at a time:

“1) When I search for a track that I don’t have and the search results show the ones I can purchase… whenever I click on “Purchase Track” i get the error message “Sorry, Unable to find track price data on server”. Can’t really purchase a track without a price..”

If these are SAT songs, that’s why. Unless you’re located in the UK specifically, right now you can’t purchase any tracks from SAT elsewhere (although soon you will be able to in the rest of EU). The SAT results actually shouldn’t be showing up at ALL, but that’s a bug in the current beta that will be resolved soon. The songs with KC next to them should be purchasable still.

Due to the recent crack down on selling tracks from manufacturers outside of the US into the US, SAT (select a track) can no longer sell songs into the US legally. A couple other sites, including a very popular Canadian based site, are now geo-blocking the USA too. Karaoke licensing in the USA is a nutty thing…

“2) Very often when I use Video Karaoke files, the files go out of sync only on Karaoki (even though they are properly sync’d on other video software.”

Since you have to utilize third-party codecs in order for Karaoki to play videos at all (we have no native support for videos in Karaoki at this time), this is likely codec related. You can try installing the mega codec pack here and see if Karaoki plays the videos after efficiently: http://www.pcdj.com/karaoke-video-codec-pack/

    3) I can’t seem to be able to use the “Graphics Offset” options to fix this… The video just goes completely out of sync

Correct, since with video files the video/audio are connected the graphics offset won’t work correctly – CDG technology is a bit different. But this is something we should look into nonetheless!

    Hi Dftweedie,

I think when they state “that participants in some legal suit with/ against them are barred from enrolling in the licensing program” they mean that any KJ/Venue they are currently suing for copyright infringement can’t enroll. That they can’t be protected now by getting licensed, as it’s too late…

Since they own the copyrights to both the SC and CB catalogs now, they can enforce their media shifting policies legally.

It’s an odd scenario from my high-level view of things, but I do think it’s all within their legal rights.

Alan, you need to try the new Karaoki beta!

You have a new “search results” tab on the left. This makes the entire MIDDLE Section of the Karaoki browser for search results – and expands the rotation list the entire right hand side of the browser. So this is probably what you’re looking for!

You can download the new beta in Karaoki and try this now. Open Karaoki, click options -> utilities -> check for update. Install the “beta bug fixes” – and you’ll get the new “search results” tab on the left hand side of the Karaoki browser. Click that to see the new search view.

There’s more information about this new feature HERE

Here’s the video overview that shows you how the new search features work:

    Enjoy!

    Thanks hitsalive,

We only have support for 2 sound cards when using the internal mixer mode – so one card for headphones, one for main. The reason we don’t (And will not) have support for 2 sound cards when using an external mixer is that often times one sound card will drive the sound slightly better than another – resulting in sync issues. This will break certain functionality – such as the beat grid, beat aware effects, sync etc. With having MANY pro audio interface and DJ controller options with multichannel pro audio interfaces built in (using professional audio drivers, so lower latency control, too) users have plenty of choices (so they don’t have to use two separate sound cards).

The history is a running log – but songs are now date and time stamped. So you can select a “date range” easily enough – and even create a permanent playlist from a date, like this: https://youtu.be/3vyiQB1Z_hE

As noted previously, we are going to make it so that when you’re in the history log section and you use search – you can search for a date. For example: Searching for January 1st 2014 – just type in 1-1-15 in search and it will bring it up (may not work exactly like this, but that’s what we’re considering at this time).

I think you should also try PCDJ Karaoki – I’m biased of course, but I feel it’s a superior karaoke hosting application – and we sell to a lot of Hoster customers. So we have a stand-alone karaoke show hosting solution (Karaoki) already, a direct competitor to MTU and the others. DEX 3 is designed as a DJ and video mixing application first and foremost, but Karaoke support will continue to grow -there are many DJs/KJs that are looking for a true all-in-one solution to get the job done – as they want to transition seamlessly between DJ/karaoke.

Jadesdj – are these VOB files (which can be renamed mp2)? We do not support those, and do not plan to. Due to how we buffer the entire track into RAM, among some other reasons, VOB/MP2 isn’t supported. I would go with MP4 H.264 encoded files as an alternative (Which has become the industry standard).

    Thanks Guys!

Thanks guy, great lists so far!

A few of these things are already included (in one way, or another), and some items are already in the works (such as text to screen, slideshow and visualizations, reordering lists, supporting more zip formats for karaoke, a way to easily see or search history dates in the history list…etc).

    1) You can clear the search box by clicking ESC on your keyboard.
    2) You can change text size in the decks via “skins” – some skins offers larger time clocks in the decks
    3) While the history shows time and date now, we want to make it so while you’re in the history list you can “search” by date and/or date range.
    4) Love the idea of an in-app video subscription, but just no suitable solutions available for us to embed yet!

Thanks! Are you running Windows 10? Did you recently receive an update?

A recent windows 10 update has crippled a lot of software due to an issue with internet connectivity/security. My bet is the update, if you did indeed apply one, is the root cause of this. I think it’s only affecting some users – but we’ve seen some issues with Karaoki caused by the update, too. I think it’s basically locking things up when it goes to check connectivity on startup (via pulselocker) and basically isn’t getting a response it expects – and it hangs.

    Let me know, thanks

Harry, that’s interesting – I’m thinking it may have more to do with having a “BAD CONNECTION” than not having a connection. Meaning, it may be locking up due to searching for a connection and finding one, but unable to properly connect. I know we had a similar issue with Karaoke Cloud Pro and Karaoki.

If you’re logged out though, it shouldn’t even try. I’ve just run some tests, without internet, and have no issues loading DEX 3 – whether or not I have it set to login on startup. So something unique is going on here – I also have no other reports of this. We will look into it however! In short, being logged out should mean Pulselocker is OFF.

What happens if you disable wifi completely, and then try to launch DEX 3?

As for the samples, you can delete them manually from: Documents -> PCDJ-DEX3 -> Samples.

Yes, it’s true. The US has had to abide by it for a couple years now, but is now also being enforced in the UK. Basically, it’s a list of artist/song writers that won’t provide permission to license their tracks for karaoke.

This list may be a little dated (it’s possible some of the artists have changed their mind since it was originally published, and may have songs available in karaoke format to sell) – but it was originally provided by Digitrax (karaoke cloud pro providers): http://www.pcdj.com/karaoke-no-fly-list-these-singers-dont-want-you-to-sing-their-songs/

They (Digitrax) discuss this further here:
    Karaoke Mailbag – About that No-Fly List…

I know our distributor in the UK had to turn off the ability to purchase any songs on the no-fly-list, so they’ve further confirmed the lists validity.

Let us know if you have any further questions!

One other item to be sure: Update ALL drivers on this machine, including the graphics card. With Windows 10 you really need to stay on top of all updates.

This sounds like either a sound card issue (can’t properly engage the sound card on startup) or a database issue (for example, maybe you have too much music in the library and not enough RAM to handle the search cache).

When you start DEX 3 it buffers your entire tag cache into RAM – so as an example: If you have over 150,000 songs, you’ll need around 8-10GB of RAM for DEX 3 to handle the search cache. You may need more if you have a lower end graphics card.

First thing to try to make sure it’s not a bad setting (or the sound card):

Open up documents -> PCDJ-DEX3 -> Settings. DELETE the file in that folder labeled “preferences”. Now start DEX 3 again, does it crash? If so I suspect a corrupt (or too large for your system) database.

Please let me know how it goes!

GREAT suggestions Meep70 – didn’t even think about the ability to use two cards.

These will be included in the blog post, mucho gracias!

    Hello McGreen0,

If you ever used the old PCDJ VRM software (RED, BLUE or FX VRM) than the issue is you have bad indexes at the ends of your files – this was caused by VRM. You would likely also have silence/pops/clicks after the song ends as well.

If this is the case, please email me at rsherr at pcdj dot com and I’ll send you a tool that will remove the bad frames/silence/clicks.

    Thanks

Alan, you will probably see this on your end following these steps: Create a case – choose to scan a folder that doesn’t have any songs in it, and import now. Then try using an extraction method and click GO – it will likely happen,

Yes, thanks for bringing that to our attention again. I too have seen the unhandled exception error when you try to re-scan a case using extraction method when no songs were imported. So there may indeed need to be error handling put in place for when that occurs.

    Hello, Ryan here!

Is this the case with all videos added to the sidelist? Or only those with large album art? If you are who I believe you are (I could be wrong!), than we determined it had something to do with very large album art inserting into the DB, creating the (very) momentary lag in video.

We are looking at a fix on this end, but you could attempt to strip the album art from those particular files for now as a temp solution.

    Hello,

Correct, pitch bend isn’t currently supported with the keyboard and learn – there are various reasons for this, but mainly due to the incremental nature of pitch bend.

Please also update to DEX 3. It has replaced DEX 2 (about a year and a half ago) and is a free upgrade for DEX 2 customers. Simply download and install the DEX 3 demo to the same machine DEX 2 is already activated on. While it will not overwrite DEX 2, it will pick up DEX 2’s activation so it will open up in full-version mode – ready to use.

It may allow for mapping the pitch bend buttons to keyboard shortcuts with learn, but I’m honestly not 100% on this!

Hello Sten, I don’t think we enabled that in our map actually. Surprised I haven’t been asked before! I will see if it’s a difficult thing to add though. I’ll let you know!

I just tried the BGM playback to see if I can re-create the skip. I have no skip or skipping when Background music starts playing again. However, what mode do you have the background music player in? I’m using the setting where the BGM starts a new track every time it fades back in.

For mp4, have you installed the KLITE mega code pack? Karaoki doesn’t have native support for videos – although many times the codec for mp4 is already on the system. Here’s info on the KLITE codec pack “mega” (click image below)

Hello BossHurley, how large of a key step are you making?

You shouldn’t have any issues on a supported machine making some fairly large key changes without degrading sound quality. Can you possibly make a recording of the key change issue? Use the record feature in DEX 3 to capture the sound and email it over to me!
