PCDJ DEX 3 Public Beta Pre-Release Launched (UPDATED: RC4 Launched 8-2-14)

dex3rc1

It’s finally crunch time, and we want your help with testing our PCDJ DEX 3 DJ Software release candidate (RC4)

DEX3screenshotfullrezOver the last 18 months our developers have spent a copious amount of time holed up in our batcave crafting our next generation of DJ software that allows DJ to mix all media types – Audio, Music Videos and Karaoke.  The new “version 3” platform is the foundation for our next 5-10 years of development.

This first “3” release incorporates a myriad of new functionality, complete with new video mixing engine,  graphics engine, browser and DJ controller communication protocols.    It’s really just the beginning, as now that the platform upgrade is about to launch (with a little help from you in testing the release candidate posted below)  free updates will be plentiful and released often.   Our goal for the initial DEX 3 launch is a solid gig-ready core, which will make it easy for our development team to continue to pile on the code — we have lots of exciting featured planned for this year alone.

Here’s a list of notable features included in our release candidate public beta version below:

  • 4 Full-Featured DJ Decks for Audio Mixing, Top two for mixing videos and doing karaoke (2 deck skin also included in options)
  • Skins dynamically re-size to resolutions we don’t already have native support for (high-resolution skins included)
  • New Icons for all the new lists
  • New Browser with new “add as favorite” folder nesting feature, album art, and new “waitlist/sidelist/singers list” panedex2deckskinvideo
  • Double-Click a track to send to new “sidelist/waitlist”
  • Drag and drop re-ordering in any list
  • Date stamped running log/history
  • Each Individual DJ Deck’s Effects can be controlled via the “FX Grid” module in the middle of the mixer section (with indicator “lights” to show which deck has an active effect or multiple active effects)
  • New “Brake and Reverse” buttons on the skin, which can be mapped using “Midi Learn”
  • New Video Mixing engine and separate video preview windows for decks A and B
  • Waveforms are more defined to properly display sound and volume changes
  • And More…

We really want your feedback and bug reports!   Please be sure to post any found issues in this thread on the PCDJ Message Forum

DEX 3 will NOT overwrite your DEX 2 installation, it’s a new platform and installs as a completely separate application with it’s own library files.

    question
can you change the size of the pane, number pane won’t show past 9999.
can you import dex 2 play lists, would save me a lot of work.
how do you know when the whole song file is in the data base?
can you select what shows in the middle pain, like you could with dex 2?

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

The pane size is currently fixed, but we are working on a method to display all data in a particular field (such as a mouse over, although that’s not how we plan to do it). You can import DEX 2 playlists by creating a new (empty) list and the clicking the “add” button. Then select import playlist, and you can import the older style lists. Keep in mind you can now use the “add to favorites” feature to build groups (tags are now displayed in dynamic folders and favorites).

Not sure what you mean by the database, as you don’t have to put songs into it at all if you don’t want to. But when you add to any user created list or the database, you can tell it’s finished if no more songs are pilling in from the bottom. I’m also not sure what you mean by “can you select what shows in the middle pane”? Whatever user list or directory/folder/favorite you open on the left (browser side) will display their contents in the middle pane. You can also send all contents of ANY list or folder to the new sidelist/automix list – just right click in the list and select the option to “send all to sidelist” etc.

        Terry says:

For karaoke, is there or will there be a singers list. Also, one of the things I missed after changing from Karaoki to dex 2 was the ticker feature. Will that feature ever be available in dex 3? Thanks

        • Ryan Sherr
          Ryan Sherr says:

Terry, the new “sidelist” works as a basic singers list in DEX 3 – as shown in this video here: http://youtu.be/YYUxQqY8IeI

DEX 3, the first release, is a “foundation” upgrade – throughout this year we’ll release many updates, including additional karaoke features. A news ticker (text to screen) will be in an update, as well as visualizations and other video based functions. We also plan to start incorporating some of the other features users like in Karaoki, such as singer and song history. Thanks

Looking forward to downloading this when I get home – just a small thing – but are the waveforms not coloured? – i.e Spectrum for BAss, Mids Highs etc…. Cheers 🙂

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Hi Dwight, frequency based waveforms will come later this year – we’re not happy with the results of the existing attempt at frequency colored waveforms, so for now we’ve included improved waveforms but not colored. DEX 3 is the foundation for the next 5-10 years of development, so lots more to come this year alone.

  4. DJ Dave
    DJ Dave says:

At the end of a lot of my songs, there is dead space with little blips of sound. Is that normal or is this something the program added on intentionally? Is there a way of having it decide when to automix/crossfade to the next song once the end of the song is near? Looking forward to the new software!

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Hi Dave, those sounds you hear at the end of the files, the silence and popping, it’s actually present in the files. This is a bug that was created by using the old VRM software from Visiosonic. Basically, every time you’d play the song, it would re-index the track – adding frames to the ends of the files. The more you played the files, the more indexes and time was added to the songs. Unfortunately this was never fixed. We’ve attempted to write in “ignore bad frames” featured into our new software, but since it’s a 100% custom audio engine and we use a very unique buffering system (compared to other products out there) – it isn’t an option unfortunately.

The good news is there is a fix, just email our sales department using the form on PCDJ.com and we’ll send you a tool to run and clean up/fix the bad frames issue. It will also clean up a lot of drive space, as usually 1MB of more is added to the files along with the silence/popping sound.

Use the AUTOMIX function in DEX 3 to automatically mix through your waitlists of songs – it will blend seamlessly, but of course you need to remove the bad frames/silence from the ends of your files for this to work as you would expect.

      Thanks

        DJ Dave says:

        Good evening Ryan,

Thank you for the quick reply and the great info! I will definitely contact the sales department for the tool and get my music cleaned up. I appreciate all the help.

hi there i am a normal dj and only play songs back to back interupted only by karaoke tracks and hopefully visualizations i dont mix music is there any way we can disable all the mixing and sound effects so we dont accidently start looping and scratching by mistake i think u will find tthat a high percentage of djs dont need these features A clock somewhere on the system would be handy so we can time our music till the end of the gig . Likewise in the wait list have the time each track ends.I think it is a great program and is hheading in the right direction Formerly used SAMDJ but now switching dex keep up the good worn thanks.

  6. david lebritton
    david lebritton says:

hi again .I used dex 3 beta at my regular gig last night doing a mixture of video tracks nomal mp3 tracks & karaoke all shown on 3 large screen tvs plus a large projector all around the venue. The main issues i found were 1 when you drag & drop a track into the wait list it automaticaly goes to the bottom of the list no matter where you try to place it (ie) at the top or to play next .And when you try to drag it from the bottom to the top nit is very reluctant and slow to do so. 2 th e crossfader between video tracks is rather slow to move over at the end of track to start new track on next deck. I do hope this is some help in your developement. The library is a breath of fresh air. Eccelent lookin forward to full version Thanks DJ Davey

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Thanks David! If you double click a track in the waitlist/sidelist it will move that track to the top of the list. We’ll look at fade speed adjustments for automix.

  7. david lebritton
    david lebritton says:

Thanx for that Ryan. I have already noticed the changes in rc2 great improvement. Is there any way we can apply a colour tag to a whole catagory (ie) karaoke entire library it would be nice to see wait list with say red for karaoke blue for video and white for audio making it easyier to recognize when very busy. Not that i ever play blue videos mind that is just a rumor. suggesst right click list .select all .apply tag. Thanx again

  8. Nelson
    Nelson says:

After adding a song to the playlist, I right-clicked the track to see if I could remove it. The only option I saw was clear list. Is there a way to clear just the select track? When I tried to clear the playlist, DEX crashed twice.

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Nelson, haven’t had any reports of clearing a list causing a crash – if you can email us your error log that may be helpful! It’s easy to remove tracks from any list/playlist – click on the song, click DELETE key on your keyboard (this will remove the song immediately from the list, but its not physically deleting the file from your HD)

  9. DJ Ximer
    DJ Ximer says:

Did I hear correctly? Y’all ain’t gonna charge for this upgrade?

The way I see it… y’all should. Why? Because the few extra bucks you make on this massively MAJOR upgrade lays the groundwork for future updates & upgrades. In other words… it builds a bank for the development department in the future.

Like what Jon Taffer of Bar Rescue says… “You don’t give away anything… you’re in business to make a profit.”

And I want y’all to stay around continuing with developing the BEST DJ programs anywhere. <<< period!

$29 – $39- or even $49 bucks is VERY reasonable for any previous PCDJ owner upgrade… and besides… it's expected from any other software purchase. Such as Microsoft… you'll pay full dollar for any upgrade!

C'mon Ryan/PCDJ… the few extra bucks will come in handy down the road. Think about it… I've followed y'all for the past, nearly two years, on this upgrade… and I know you've invested a lot of time into this… for all of us.

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Thanks, and I’m sure ownership will love your comments 😉 Our take is DEX 3 is what we truly intended DEX 2 to be, and obviously this is just the start for what we have in store for DEX 3. It’s a platform upgrade, yes, but again we really wanted to provide this version free to existing users that have come along with DEX 2 from the start, dealing with some growing pains along the way. I think we owe it to them. Now in the future we do have some add-ons planned, which may very well be “pay-for”, but until then updates to DEX 3 will continue to be free of charge.

  10. Nelson
    Nelson says:

I tested again trying to clear list while track was selected in the side-list. DEX crashes. I’m not sure were to review the log file.

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Nelson, thanks and confirmed! It seems when you use the right-click clear-list function in the new side list it will indeed crash the app. Already found and fixed for public release!

hi ryan it just keeps getting better i understand you have sorted crashing bugs for main release. i have noticed that i managed to get singers name on screen once but when tried again it does not work i my be doing something wrong can u advise thanx

      • david lebritton
        david lebritton says:

ryan. surely we should be displaying singers names whe n playing a normal audio track not when in idle mode .i loaded a to the wait list a selection of tracks including audio video & karaoke to play about 30 mins and the next singers never displayed at all . also i have been unsuccesfull so far trying to add any m3u playlists to a new playlist catagory

        • Ryan Sherr
          Ryan Sherr says:

When your next song in the waitlist/singers list is a karaoke track DEX 3 will display the song on screen (next singers) – and does only show when the player is stopped (as usually you’re introducing your next singer etc, so there almost always is a pause between singers/songs). I have asked if we can show next singers on screen if you’re only playing an audio tracks before hand (so it would display next singers on screen if those karaoke songs are further down in your singers list – not just at the top).

I have imported M3U lists just fine here, and lists from DEX 2. First, right click and choose new list – name it. Then, click the + symbol (add button) and choose to import playlist. You should then be able to select the M3U list and it should populate the new list you just created with the songs in the M3U.

          • david lebritton
            david lebritton says:

most djs dont stop the player to anounce things like next singer we usually just turn the music volume down and mike over it the last thing we nead is dead air. or silence external mixer used incidently. plus i have tried to load m3u files as you suggest but still no joy am i missing something ryan

          • Ryan Sherr
            Ryan Sherr says:

Hmm, interesting, most KJs I’ve talked to usually do have some silence (or with the background music player playing in background) between singers – which is why our Karaoki software only shows “next singers” on screen between songs while the player is idle. We’ll look into other methods to do this in the near future.

As for M3U lists, I’m still having no issues. The M3U’s you’re trying to import, where they created on this same computer? Reason I ask is if the file paths for the physical file locations within the M3U are invalid, DEX 3 won’t show any tracks etc.

  13. Verne
    Verne says:

Thanks for chance to try DEX 3 One of my questions had already been answered on the blog. The other was that I download music while playing and I can’t seem to drag files to the DEX 3 , I have no problems with the DEX 2. Also are any of the fixes you make up dated on the Beta test or will they come out with the release of DEX 3. Thanks again

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Try using the “+” button to add music to a list from your drive – but again, you can just access whatever files you’ve downloaded using the EXPLORER tree view as well. Really don’t recommend downloading/using other apps while using DEX 3 however, if you can avoid it. We have fixed many bugs throughout the last three RC releases (RC1 threw RC3) and will likely release another RC soon.

  14. Ryan Sherr
    Ryan Sherr says:

Right now you will need to use OSX 10.9 or higher, although we are still looking at making DEX 3 backwards compatible with 10.7/10.8. However, due to some of the very new underlying code, this may not be feasible.

  15. Nelson
    Nelson says:

Audio Quality – When in AUTO mix and time stretch and beat match enabled, the audio quality suffers when the two tracks loaded are separated by more than 10 BPM’s. The audio takes on a flange sound until the track playing returns to its original beat. When the pitch adjusts, it introduces a faint click sound into the track. Is there a way to search by BTM? Can the playlist be used for AUTO mode? In AUTO mode, the track in the playlist wouldn’t auto-load. It worked fine from the side-list.

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Sorry Nelson, can’t re-create this? Are you using a professional grade sound card? That make a big difference in performance! Also, make sure you’re using “high quality time stretching” in options. I can easily go around the 20% pitch adjust marker without artifacts etc. I would put our keylock/time-stretching up against anything on the market.

The audio engine, and therefore the key lock and other audio features, are carried over from DEX 2 – no major changes there, as it’s our own custom audio engine (Which I also believe sounds better than the competition!)

  16. Verne
    Verne says:

Just connected everything up to my system and it works fine with only one problem. When running karaoke the songs load in the side list but won’t disappear after playing (they remain on the side list) unless I run them in auto mode. Also, is the RC 3 available for download? If so where do I find it. Thanks! Verne

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

I agree, we’ll need to add an option that will delete tracks on load from the sidelist when not using automix – same for audio files too. RC4 is now posted for download as of this morning, same download links in this same thread (above).

    PAUL says:

    hi Ryan
dex 3 installed all good how can i lesson to the channels on each side when one is playing through my mixer do i need to sound cards in my computer

  18. Nelson
    Nelson says:

I use two monitors with DEX. The first monitor is my interface and the second is my output. With DEX 3, I’m unable to move my interface from one monitor to another, it is locked in. With DEX 2, I had to run interface on monitor 2 because the video window would only expand on monitor 1. Is there a way to change the skin resolution on DEX 3 so I can move it between monitors?

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

You can drag and re-size any of the skins dynamically by just grabbing the bottom left corner and dragging/dropping. Also, you can definitely move the floating video window to screen two and maximize it there full screen. You just need to make sure your machine is in extended display mode BEFORE you open up DEX 3. DEX 3 (DEX 2 did this as well) will detect what mode your screen it in on startup – so in order for screen 2 to maximize to full screen on your secondary screen, you must been in extended display mode previous to launching the software.

  19. Gerald
    Gerald says:

Well tonight I will be trying out Dex 3 live at a show, so far after release 3 Im liking, it was a little laggy last night when testing ver 3 lets see how 4 does

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Gerald, yes, please let us know. Curious, what exactly do you mean by laggy? I can run 5ms of latency here using the IO pro audio card in my DJ controller, which is as responsive as any previous PCDJ version. Also, if you’re mixing videos, keep in mind you want a video card with dedicated video memory – makes a big difference. Thanks!

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Yes, you can do this now in RC4. Highlight any song in the library, click the -/+ symbols (next to backspace key) to decrease/increase text size.

      • david lebritton
        david lebritton says:

only works to increase size if you increase and then try to decrease it wont come down in size again

        • Ryan Sherr
          Ryan Sherr says:

I’m doing this right now, and – works right away to decrease size. I can increase, and decrease any which way I try. Again, you can only use the -/+ next to backspace for this. Are you testing on a MAC? Sorry, can’t recall!

    bryan says:

I hated dex 2 with a passion and I am currently still using dex 1 and love it, gonna give 3 a try and hope the cost stays decent

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Sorry to hear that! I know one thing that all DEX 1 users seemed to miss with DEX 2 is the new “sidelist/waitlist” – which is now back in DEX 3. Hope you enjoy it!

  21. david lebritton
    david lebritton says:

hi again ryan the text resizer in rc4 will increase text size but refuses to decrease it or do i have a keyboard fault thanx

  22. Nelson
    Nelson says:

    Ryan,
I’m missing something. I’m unable to re-size the skin to move it to another screen. On DEX 2, I would change the screen resolution, move to other monitor, than change resolution back. The multiple resolution option is no longer available with DEX 3. I tried to re-size the window the way you instructed and wasn’t able to get it to work. Also, the video output window disappears when the database loads. The only way I’m able to keep the video output window from disappearing is to hold it with the left mouse click until the database completely loads then release the left mouse click.

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

If you double-click the very top bar of DEX 3 (anywhere across the top bar) it should minimize slightly. You should then be able to drag from any corner to resize the skin. You should also then be able to drag to another monitor if that’s your goal.

The secondary video window isn’t disappearing, it’s just opening up the the last active position (if you left it open on screen 2 before you close the app, it will try to open up there again after you start it next time). Could it be that you had the monitor configuration different previously? Meaning, the floating window was drug off to the right of your screen previously (and is once again attempting to open up there on startup) and now the monitor configuration now has screen 2 off to the left of your main display? Something like that?

  23. Nelson
    Nelson says:

    Ryan,
Thanks. The double-click the top bar is what I was missing. The video window isn’t anywhere I can see. It shows up during start-up but disappears when the database loads. Is there a way to reopen the window from DEX3? For example, can I close the video window then re-open it later?

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Again, the video window will open up at the last position it was closed in – so it will open up in “virtual space” if a secondary monitor isn’t connected and it was left open on one previous to shut down. Just try closing the software, go to Documents -> PCDJ-DEX3 -> Settings. DELETE the preferences file, now open up DEX 3.

  24. Verne
    Verne says:

Had my first gig Saturday using the DEX 3 (RC4) and was very happy with it, especially using the auto play function. Just wanted to ask, I mentioned earlier that I download music (audio & karaoke) while playing. Is there a way to keep the karaoke going on the monitor while going to a website to download music. Another words can I search on my laptop without interrupting what’s going on the monitor? My old karaoke program connected to the monitor without interruption from my laptop. Thanks again Ryan!

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Thanks! Glad to hear it went well. We will have an option to keep screen 2 video “always up” while minimizing the software on your own machine. Obviously we do recommend you never use any third party apps, or download from the internet, while DJing (as we can’t guarantee stability), but we’ll have the option regardless.

  25. Nelson
    Nelson says:

    Ryan,
If you use shift & +, the font will increase. If you use Shift & -, it won’t. Maybe David is using shift. Anyway, I was able to get the video window to reappear by deleting preferences. I closed the window during a previous test session because I was only testing audio. It would be nice to have a feature to re-open the window after you close it. If I close the video window, do I need to delete the preferences every time?

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Nelson, to increase and decrease font you don’t use shift. Just click on any track in the library, and use the -/+ keys to decrease/increase font size incrementally by 1pt. I think we need to remove the ability to change size via the number pad entirely, and use them for extra keys mappable with the “learn” function.

When you close DEX 3 with the video window maximized/open it will remember the position. Every time after when you open DEX 3, it will open the floating/dragable preview window in the same position as last, or in expanded (full screen)mode if that’s how you left it.

If you aren’t planning to use the same screen 2 setup (meaning always opening up DEX 3 with the same monitor/screen 2 connected) all the time, I suggest before you close the expanded screen 2 display before closing DEX 3. If you have the video window expanded on screen 2 – click on the “black” or “video” area of the expanded view (You will notice that you will not see your mouse pointer when you move your mouse over the screen 2 display, which is by design) with your mouse. This is to put “focus” on the secondary expanded video display. Now click ESC to minimize the video display – now you can drag it back to your own screen and close it. I hope that’s easy enough to understand! Otherwise, if you don’t close the second screen before shutting down DEX 3 (and you no longer have your secondary display connected) you would have to re-connect the screen 2 monitor again to “see” the expanded video display again, so you can then close it.

Let me know if that helps.

  26. Nelson
    Nelson says:

    Ryan,
I selected the X close option in the top right corner of the video output window because at the time I wasn’t using it. The next time I opened DEX, it closed the video window since that was the last position DEX remembers. The only way I was able to see it again was by deleting the preferences file. This is why after you close it, it would be nice to have an option to re-open it.

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Nelson, my mistake, I get it now! Good news, when the floating video window is closed, all you have to do to open it back up is click the middle video window on screen (the big preview window that displays your mixed video output). Clicking that will once again launch the floating video window. Sorry, I probably should have determined this is what you were trying to do earlier on!

  27. Nelson
    Nelson says:

    Ryan,
Thanks for your patience. Is there a way to add itunes media to the database? There are no right click options under itunes music tree.
    .

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Nelson, you can just scan the folder where your itunes files are into the DB. Click on DB, click the + symbol (add button) and click “add folder” – select your folder you want to import (where iTunes stores your music) and click OK

  28. david le britton
    david le britton says:

hi ryan i assume the initial testing is complete as dex 3 is out for general release as a dex 2 purchaser i understand this is gratis if i download full version a. will it install over prev rc6 and retain my music & vid files or will i have to re install them. also which selection should i make (ie) try or buy as i have my original licence key how do i enter it thanx

    • Ryan Sherr
      Ryan Sherr says:

Hi David, yes, DEX 3 has been launched – it’s the same exact installer as Release Candidate 6 however, so really no need to install anything else at this point. You can activate with your same DEX 2 code, although I’m under the impression RC6 picks up your license key from DEX 2 if it’s on the same machine, thus no need to activate. If you do though, just use your same DEX 2 license key: Click the “click here to buy or unlock” red text on screen, choose “I already bought this” and enter in your license activation code to unlock.
